Can you really call it your choice if your family decides which biradari you are allowed to marry into?
In this episode of, we discuss love marriage, biradari, family expectations, social pressure, caste identity and personal choice in Pakistani society.
We ask some difficult questions:
• Should biradari matter more than compatibility?
• Why are young people allowed to choose careers but often not life partners?
• Is family preference different from family control?
• Why does “What will people say?” influence marriage decisions?
• Are love marriages judged differently from arranged marriages?
• Should character, responsibility and compatibility matter more than caste or family background?
We also look at Pakistani marriage data and discuss how common marriage within extended families remains — while also making an important distinction between cousin marriage, biradari preference and forced marriage.
The real question may not be whether love marriage or arranged marriage is better.
It may be this:
*When choosing a life partner, are we choosing the person — or their caste and family name?*
