🌼🎧 Two hours of Vietnamese lo-fi from Hanoi, 1996 — đàn tranh zither, đàn bầu monochord and bamboo flute over warm Rhodes, jazzy chords and a head-nodding boom-bap groove. Instrumental background music for work and long evenings. 100% instrumental.
The air went dry overnight. The milk flowers were out before she noticed. Hanoi gets about three weeks of this a year: the wet heat lifts, the sky goes high and pale, and the old quarter fills with hoa sữa — the milk flower — which opens all at once and far too strongly. People complain about it in October and miss it by November. This album is those weeks, from first light on Hoàn Kiếm to the steam off a phở cart long after dark.
Perfect for: working late · a long afternoon · a kitchen at the end of the day · background music that stays out of the way. Gapless and levelled throughout, laid out as one day rather than shuffled.
🎧 Best with headphones.

🎼 THE INSTRUMENTS OF THIS ALBUM
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
🎻 ĐÀN TRANH — the Vietnamese zither: sixteen strings over movable bridges, struck with picks while the left hand presses behind the bridge to bend a note after it has sounded. It leads fourteen of the thirty tracks, and it takes the quick ones. The zither gets the mornings.
🪕 ĐÀN BẦU — one string, no frets, no second note. Every pitch is a harmonic, bent by a flexible horn rod in the other hand. It cannot be hurried, so it leads the six slowest tracks here and nothing else.
🎋 ĐÀN T'RƯNG — a bamboo xylophone from the Central Highlands, tubes hung loose so they knock as they ring. Four bright tracks.
🌙 ĐÀN NGUYỆT — the moon lute: two silk strings and very tall frets. Three tracks, late in the day.
🎵 SÁO TRÚC — the bamboo flute, breathy and unhurried. Three tracks, none above 72 BPM.
🎹 Everything else holds still: the same Rhodes, kit and crackle on all thirty. Only the melody, the lead and the hour move.

🌼 HANOI — 1996
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Hanoi in 1996 sat between two versions of itself. The embargo had been lifted two years earlier and the first foreign offices were opening, but the streets were still more bicycle than motorbike and the old quarter worked as it had for six hundred years — thirty-six streets, each named for the trade that owned it. Hàng Đào sold silk, Hàng Bạc silver, Hàng Mã paper.
Long Biên bridge was already a century old: French-built between 1899 and 1902, bombed repeatedly from 1967 to 1972, patched each time and never replaced. It still carries trains, bicycles and people across the Red River, and it has never carried cars.
The season itself is short and exact. Cốm — young green rice from Vòng village, pounded flat and sold wrapped in lotus leaves — is on sale only during these same few weeks. The milk flowers and the cốm arrive together and go together. That is the whole autumn, and everyone here agrees it is worth the rest of the year.
