Let’s Find Out!! | Chris Baseford There are probably hundreds of 1176 plugins available at this point, and somehow every time a new one comes out, we find ourselves wondering… Is this the one I’ve been missing? For this livestream, I’m going to compare a bunch of different 1176 emulations. But this isn’t really about figuring out which one is “best.” In fact, it’s not really about 1176s at all. I think we all get caught up in the idea of “new,” “better,” or “more accurate.” Another compressor, another EQ, another preamp, another plugin modeled after a slightly different version of something we already own. And every time, there’s the temptation to think maybe this is the thing that takes a sound from okay to good, or from good to great. The reality is that there are differences between these tools. One 1176 might be a little brighter, another might have more saturation, one might grab the transient differently or have a slightly different shape to the release. The question is how significant those differences really are. Could a tiny change to the attack or release create a bigger difference? What about 1 dB more or less compression? A basic EQ move before or after it? And that same question applies well beyond 1176s. We could be talking about preamps, EQs, compressors, microphones, converters, or almost any other piece of gear. The 1176 just happens to be the perfect example because there are so many versions of essentially the same tool. So we’re going to use them as a case study. We’ll compare a bunch of 1176 plugins across different sources, listen for where they genuinely differ, and put those differences into perspective. When does having another flavor actually give you something useful? And when are we buying a slightly different version of something we already have, hoping it’ll make a bigger difference than it realistically can? This isn’t about proving that all plugins sound the same, or that buying new gear is a waste of money. It’s about understanding what actually makes a meaningful difference to the end result.
