Ultrasonic Welding Facility and WeldSealer Device

At our site in Augsburg, a state-of-the-art welding system is being used to join thermoplastic fibre-reinforced composite structures. This innovative technology, featuring #robotic handling and continuous process management, enables the joining of large and complex-shaped components on a 1:1 scale. Aerospace structures are characterized by their enormous size and the high demands placed on their joints. Achieving an airworthy weld connection requires capturing all relevant process data for quality assurance, which is only possible under optimized process conditions. These conditions have been developed and extensively validated at DLR. For the pre- and post-treatment of weld joints, the WeldSealer process has been developed. This robot-guided tool enables additive material application with a cohesive bond. Before ultrasonic welding, the necessary additional matrix can be applied in the joining zone. After joining laminate components, the joints can be sealed with the WeldSealer, creating defined joining zone geometries and significantly improving joint properties.
