A ferry ride can be more than simply getting from one place to another. This quiet journey begins at Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island, where passengers and vehicles board the ferry for the crossing to Salt Spring Island. Soon the terminal falls behind and the landscape opens into the waters and forested islands of British Columbia’s Gulf Islands. From the outer deck, the journey unfolds slowly — passing shorelines, distant hills, passengers gathering at the rail, the wake stretching behind the ferry, and changing light across the water. There is no rush to arrive. For me, part of the beauty of travelling through the Gulf Islands is the journey itself: standing outside, watching one island give way to another, and noticing how remarkably quiet the world can feel from the deck of a ferry. This film is simply an invitation to make the crossing with me.
