Why did the United States unify but the Caribbean never did? Thirteen quarrelling colonies became one country. In 1958, ten British Caribbean colonies tried to do the same, with their own parliament, prime minister and flag. Four years later, the West Indies Federation was gone. This is the story of two unions side by side. From Benjamin Franklin’s “Join, or Die,” the failed Articles of Confederation, Shays’ Rebellion and the Great Compromise of 1787, to the Montego Bay conference of 1947 and the birth of the Federation of the West Indies in 1958. Why the federal budget was smaller than Jamaica’s, why the capital was stuck on an American naval base, why free movement never happened, and how Jamaica’s 1961 referendum and Eric Williams’s “one from ten leaves nought” ended it all. Then what came after: CARICOM, the Caribbean Court of Justice, the Eastern Caribbean dollar that actually works, the collapse of LIAT, and the full free movement that four countries finally launched in October 2025. And the question that still divides the region: was independence island by island the right choice? 📍 Should the Caribbean try to unify again?
