This one got personal fast. Mariah opens up about the therapy session that showed her what was missing from her priority list, and why she recorded this episode the day before taking her second daughter to college.
Monique shares what it took to let go of an old identity, and the moment she realized her calendar was full of things that weren’t moving her toward what she wants. We even put ourselves in the hot seat with five questions you can use for your own commitment audit.
WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT
Wanting something and committing to it are very different. A commitment is what lets your life start organizing around what you want.
Your calendar, your bank account and your phone will tell you the truth about where your commitments really live.
The commitment to yourself is often the hardest one to keep. When you put yourself at the top of the list, everything else can fall into order behind it.
Some commitments are hidden. People pleasing, always being the responsible one, staying busy, perfectionism and old identities can quietly run the show.
Commitment has a cost. It might ask you to give up comfort, approval, excuses, spontaneity or the fantasy of keeping every option open.
Limbo is the worst place to live. Pick a direction, commit, and let it play out.
You don’t need a giant promise. One day at a time counts.
OUR FAVORITE QUOTES
“The commitment is ultimately what you need to make in order to get what you might want.”
“I owe myself first and foremost.”
“You can’t make a commitment to something with one foot in the old paradigm.”
“Helping yourself is not selfish.”
“Make the commitment and the other pieces will fall into place.”

YOUR TURN
Grab a journal and walk through the same five questions we asked ourselves:
What do I say I want?
What am I actually committed to?
What am I currently committed to that I no longer want?
What would I have to release in order to commit to what I truly want?
What is one commitment I’m willing to make to myself today? Be specific.
Then sit with this one: what are you really ready to stop committing to?
