I wrote this poem to convey my remorse and overall feelings for what is happening in America today regarding the 400 years of unchecked racism. I feel a deep sense of shame for having enjoyed a guiltless sense of privilege that others were not afforded. I feel angry towards my country for having painted itself in the lie that it is an equal opportunity nation with freedom and rights to all men who are created equal. This was never the case here, and I am sick to my stomach that a problem so basic could still exist in this "progressive 21st century." I am committing myself to a lifetime of active anti-racism, and listening rather than hearing. I am sorry it took me so long.
