Today was a great day. So today I decided to head to this Erick that I have recorded before up in Sand Creek. My dad allowed me to go by myself today, so that was kind of cool. I arrived at this siren at about 11:40 AM and went to go get some pictures before setting up. This Erick is a rare 14-port model which, as you can tell, isn’t in the best of shape. About 10 minutes before noon, a guy drove by in a truck and asked what I was taking a picture of. I told him I was recording the siren, and he drove off. This guy will play a bigger role later. I started recording and waited for this siren to go off. As expected, this siren fired up just before noon and was pretty damn loud. I honestly forgot how loud these things are. I started packing up, and then, something I didn’t see coming happened. One of the workers at the fire department (Joel) came up to me and asked what I was doing. I told him I was recording the siren, and then he told me that he could set off the siren and would be willing to set it off. I obviously said yes and went into the fire station with him. I asked if he could set it off in "Fire," which is what was listed on the AR Timer. He said that he was on a tight schedule to get to the Twin Cities, so he was going to call one of the other fire workers (Jerry) to come down and set it off for me. Jerry is the guy who was in the truck from earlier. As Joel walked away, he gave me a lot of information about the siren. He told me that the siren actually originally came from Barron, Wisconsin, which I was very surprised by. He also told me that the siren used to be installed on an old creamery that was where the fire department is now. Shortly after, Jerry arrived and was an extremely friendly guy. I talked to him for a bit before he went inside and eventually set off the siren. This thing was extremely loud from underneath it and was ear-piercing as hell. After the test, Jerry offered to show me around the fire station. I wasn’t in a rush, so I said why not. He showed me all the different fire engines/vehicles, which one was an old Willys Jeep with a Federal Electric Type W on it, which he set off, and I recorded it, which you can see on my channel. He also showed me all the controls for the siren, along with the timer, which I thought was cool. After he showed me the fire station, and he gave me some more info about some sirens around Sand Creek. He told me that the Model 5 in Dallas, Wisconsin, and the Darley Model 3 in New Auburn, Wisconsin, both go off at noon. He said he knows this because on quiet days, you can hear each one go off in the distance, which would make sense considering I heard the 3T22 in Fall Creek last year from over 3 miles away. He also told me that this Erick does go off with the county for the monthly test. Afterwards, I went to the 508, which is outside of town, to get some pictures. Anyways, today was an awesome day, and I have to give a huge thanks to the Sand Creek Fire Department and Joel and Jerry for being so kind and willing to do something for someone they’ve never met. Enjoy!
