Farmers resort to gold panning amid soaring fertilizer, seed prices

"Imbis na palay muna yung anihin, ginto muna... Para kami makaraos." Some farmers resort to harvesting gold in Paracale, Camarines Norte due to the high cost of fertilizers and seeds. Gold panning is the process of extracting gold manually. Farmers say they receive their salaries daily, but there is no assurance of how much they would earn since it depends on the amount of gold harvested for that day. Paracale's municipal agriculture office says they will be distributing seeds. However, they admit that they have a limited budget to do so. They also permit gold panning as long as farmers will not use chemicals.
