On January 9, 1945, the U.S. Army returned to Luzon, nearly three years after the surrender of American and Filipino forces in the Philippines. *Liberation of Manila (1945)* follows the U.S. Sixth Army's advance across Luzon and the brutal month-long battle to liberate the Philippine capital from Imperial Japanese occupation. From February 3 to March 3, American forces fought *block by block and building by building* through Manila. Japanese defenders transformed the city into a fortress of barricades, mines, tunnels, fortified buildings, artillery positions, and mutually supporting strongpoints. The documentary follows the landings at **Lingayen Gulf**, the advance on Manila, liberation of prisoners at Santo Tomas and Bilibid Prison, the breaking of the Genco Line, and the battle for **Intramuros**. As U.S. forces fought deeper into the city, they also confronted the systematic killing of Filipino civilians by Japanese forces. An estimated **100,000 civilians died during the Battle of Manila**, and much of the city was damaged or destroyed. The film concludes with another enormous challenge: restoring food, water, medical care, electricity, sanitation, public safety, and government services to a shattered city.
