Thirty-six thousand years ago, an old hunter in Ice Age France could read a whole story in a few marks in the mud. That same night, a woman painted horses on a cave wall so alive they almost seem to move. So were ancient humans smarter than us, or are we smarter than them?
In this video, we spend a day with a caveman family in Ice Age France and follow the real evidence. We look at brains that got about 10% smaller over the last 30,000 years and London cab drivers who memorize about 25,000 streets. We see the paintings of Chauvet Cave, the world's oldest known cave art (a hand stencil in Indonesia at least 67,800 years old), a 73,000-year-old drawing from Blombos Cave and tiny 54,000-year-old arrowheads from Mandrin Cave. There are stories remembered for more than 7,000 years, and Ayumu, the chimpanzee who beat university students at a memory game. Then we look at two explorer disasters, Burke and Wills in Australia and the lost Franklin expedition in the Arctic, and what they reveal about the real secret of human intelligence.

If you were dropped into the Ice Age tomorrow, which skill would you struggle with most: tracking animals, finding safe plants, or making your own tools? Tell me in the comments.
