Conrad — The Man Who Saved Tyre tells the story of one of the most important acts of resistance in the history of the Crusades. In 1187, the Crusader army was destroyed at Hattin and Saladin rapidly conquered much of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. One city remained of enormous importance. Tyre. A wealthy fortified port on the Mediterranean coast, Tyre was the last major stronghold where the Crusaders could regroup. Conrad of Montferrat arrived when the city seemed close to surrender. Instead, he took command. Saladin's army surrounded Tyre and attempted to force its submission. Conrad refused. The city resisted. When the first attacks failed, Saladin withdrew. Tyre had survived. That single decision changed the course of the war. Tyre became the base from which the Crusaders rebuilt their strength, and the city later became one of the principal centers of resistance during the Third Crusade.
