Luis Balcarce is a musician, producer, and vinyl selector. He was a member of "Banda de Turistas" and since 2016 records and releases other artists for the label / queruza .
In this session, Luis proposes a journey through the discography of JJ Cale, an artist from Oklahoma who blended the roots of American music to create a style of his own: the Tulsa Sound.
He modified cheap guitars and knew how to command a recording studio to the point of using it as another instrument. With primitive drum machines, phasers, unusual distortions, Lo-Fi sounds, brass/winds, pianos, and laid-back rock lyrics.
Cale gave few interviews and was skeptical of the industry. With a rather raw and unromanticized view of the "Summer of Love," he processed the end of the '60s to enter the '70s with a completely original body of work.
JJ can be seen on the same side of the street as The Velvet Underground, feeling as though he continued that vision of music in a way. The Velvet in a noisier/avant-garde mode, and JJ in a more rural way, with a groove that incorporates silences.
He composed songs that succeeded on the 1970s charts, like "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" both popularized by Eric Clapton, one of his biggest admirers, as was Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits, in whom JJ's direct influence can be appreciated in his guitar playing and singing style.
In the '80s and '90s he entered a more futuristic phase, Digital Blues and Latin sounds, but without abandoning his characteristic sparse and laid-back tone.
The 2000s was the decade where he shared an album with Clapton. He definitively began to be seen as an artist's artist—an influence and a legacy that is still waiting to be discovered.
In 2013 he passed away, and since then, his partner Christine Lakeland has been the executor of his catalog. Christine can be seen playing guitar in his band since the late '70s. There is a 1979 video with Leon Russell available to watch on YouTube. • JJ Cale & Leon Russell at the Paradise Stu...
Luís met JJ through his friend Rulo Garcia in 2012 , big thanks to him.
