Wondrous Creatures — Base Game, All Expansions & Upgrades Unboxed

Welcome back to One Last Hand. Today we are unboxing Wondrous Creatures, followed by the Gargantuan Beasts expansion, the Crew Set and the upgraded component pack. Wondrous Creatures is a one-to-four-player worker-placement and tableau-building game set on an island filled with unusual animals. Players place their explorers across pairs of hexagonal spaces, gather resources, collect creature cards and build combinations within their personal tableau. We begin by opening the base game and looking through its large island board, dual-layered player boards, solo material, creature cards, wooden explorers and magnetic captain system. The artwork is a major part of the game’s appeal, with a large variety of individually illustrated creatures spread across the card decks. After playing the game at two players, I return to unbox the additional content and explain my initial impressions. Gargantuan Beasts introduces enormous creatures that can be awakened during the game, alongside new creature cards, captains, boards and beast trackers. The Crew Set adds additional magnetic crew meeples and crew cards, allowing players to combine one-time crew abilities with their chosen captain. We also compare the upgraded wooden and metal components with the original cardboard pieces, including the eggs, trophies, scoring markers, nets, energy tokens and time tokens. Finally, we attempt to organise everything inside the original box and see how much lid lift remains once all the additional content has been added. This is a relaxed overview rather than a detailed card-by-card showcase. I also share my thoughts after a first multiplayer game and discuss whether Wondrous Creatures could become a quicker alternative to heavier tableau-building games within our group.
