Every particle — electrons, photons, quarks — is really just a ripple in something called a quantum field. But what is that field itself made of? Tonight we trace this question from Faraday's invisible lines of force and Maxwell's unification of light and electromagnetism, through Planck and Einstein's photon, Dirac's strange prediction of antimatter, and the birth of quantum field theory itself. Along the way: why forces exist at all (gauge symmetry), why empty space is never truly empty (vacuum fluctuations, the Casimir effect, Hawking radiation), how mass comes from the Higgs field, and why gravity still refuses to fit into this picture — ending exactly where honest physics currently has to stop.
