What if our deepest identity is spiritual, and human life is the extraordinary experience through which we encounter the world? “Spiritual Being Having a Human Experience” explores this perspective through the ordinary realities of being alive: inhabiting a body, loving, learning, making mistakes, experiencing joy and pain, changing, wondering, and beginning again. The familiar phrase “We are spiritual beings having a human experience” is often attributed to French Jesuit priest and philosopher Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. The attribution is disputed: researchers have not found the wording in Teilhard’s writings, and the earliest close documented version appeared with author Wayne Dyer in 1988. Stephen Covey subsequently attributed the saying to Teilhard in 1989, helping connect the phrase with his name. Whatever its precise origin, the idea expresses a much older spiritual question found in many traditions: What if the person we see in the mirror is one dimension of a deeper existence?
