Only about 14% of the honey eaten in Britain is actually British, even though the UK has around 38,000 registered beekeepers and 220,000 hives. So where does the rest come from, and why doesn't the jar tell you?
I'm Nigel Harrington, and I've spent 20 years as a Food Inspector walking through the processing plants and bottling halls where supermarket honey is blended, filtered and packed. In this video I turn the jar around and show you the difference between what the front label wants you to feel and what the back label is legally allowed to leave out.
In this video:
Why "blend of EU and non-EU honeys" is a legal phrase that never has to name a single country, and why the blend can change from batch to batch
Rowse, the UK's best-selling honey: the shed-in-Oxfordshire story on the label vs. who owns the company today
What real British honey looks and tastes like through the seasons (heather, oilseed rape, borage), and why "tastes the same all year round" is a red flag
How ultra-filtration strips out pollen, the one fingerprint that proves where honey came from
What EU border testing found, including honey re-exported from the UK
The 30-jar DNA test by the Honey Authenticity Network UK, and the laser "fingerprint" research at Aston University
Why a 75p jar should make you ask questions, and what cheap imports mean for British beekeepers and the crops they pollinate
Manuka honey: why it's one of the most faked, and why you should look for the UMF mark
The 2002 FSA honey withdrawal that showed blending makes contamination untraceable
This video is based on publicly reported testing, industry figures and UK labelling law. It does not claim that any named brand's honey is fake or unsafe. Blending honey from several countries is legal in the UK. Labels, prices and ownership can change, so always check the current jar.
