Ethiopia’s Koysha Dam Just Hit 77% — And It Changes Everything

Ethiopia has another mega-dam—and it could be just as important for the country’s future energy strategy. The Koysha Hydropower Project, rising on the Omo River in southwestern Ethiopia, is now more than 77% complete. Planned at around 2,200 MW, Koysha is designed to generate approximately 6,460 GWh of electricity annually, making it one of Ethiopia’s largest hydropower projects after the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). But Koysha is not another GERD. GERD transformed Ethiopia’s position on the Blue Nile. Koysha is part of the Omo-Gibe hydropower cascade—and its importance could extend beyond Ethiopia’s borders. With the existing Ethiopia–Kenya electricity interconnector capable of transferring up to 2,000 MW between the two countries, Ethiopia has already established a major pathway for regional electricity trade. Koysha could add another major source of generation to that system.
