Khalid ibn al-Walid turned desert crossings, speed, and mobile cavalry into an advantage against Byzantine and Sasanian armies. From Uhud to the Battle of Yarmuk, follow the decisions behind his most famous campaigns.
In 634 CE, Khalid led a force across the Syrian desert to join the fighting against Byzantium. The crossing became one of the best-known episodes in the career of the commander remembered as the Sword of God.
Through animated battle maps, this documentary follows the cavalry attack at Uhud, the withdrawal at Mu’tah, the Ridda Wars, the fighting in Iraq, and the struggle for Syria. At Yarmuk in 636, cavalry reserves, difficult terrain, and threatened escape routes shaped a decisive battle.
But how much of the conquest depended on one man? We also examine the exhaustion of Byzantium and Persia, Khalid’s removal from command, and why historians disagree about troop numbers, routes, and parts of the battle narratives.
