Ships stand in the sand at Muynak. Farther north, fishing returned to part of the Aral Sea. How did one sea end up with two different futures?
This Worlds We Built documentary follows the Syr Darya and Amu Darya, the irrigation systems that diverted their water, and the Kok-Aral dam completed in 2005. Dated satellite images reveal the scale of the retreat and the smaller northern recovery.
In the south, restoration also means responding to a landscape that has already changed: exposed seabed, salt, dust and efforts to establish vegetation. This is a story about what engineering can recover, what it cannot do alone, and the choices that determine where river water goes.
