Storm King | Portable Modular Ambient 14 (featuring Iterum Versio, Plaits, Beads, and Random8)

The concept for this patch was to use delay and granular processing to create a sense of several voices in motion against one another out of a single plucky melody line from Plaits. The delay comes from a Noise Engineering Versio module running Iterum Versio stereo delay firmware by Alessandro Capano, with additional granular processing by Beads. The view overlooks the Hudson River and Storm King Mountain on an absolutely perfect autumn day. Modules: ALM Busy Circuits Pamela’s New Workout Mutable Instruments Plaits Jasmine & Olive Trees Door Noise Engineering Versio (Iterum Versio firmware) Mutable Instruments Beads Expert Sleepers Disting Mk4 2hp Out Mylar Melodies + Befaco Random8 Case: 4ms Pod 64x Patch Notes: The only oscillator used here is Plaits, in the wave terrain synthesis mode. The pitch sequence comes from channel 1 of Random8 which set to a slowly-evolving 13-step sequence that gradually introduces new pitches and variations. This channel is triggered by a Euclidean sequence from Pamela’s New Workout, with the probability of skipping each trigger being modulated by another Pam’s channel. To take advantage of the trigger amplitude sensitivity of the Jasmine & Olive Trees Door low pass gate, more self-modulation from Pam’s controls the level of each trigger. The cutoff frequency and decay controls of Door are also modulated from Random8. Combined with modulation to the Plaits Timbre and Morph controls scanning through the wavetables, this creates timbral variation for each note. The signal from the stereo low pass gate then passes to a Versio module running the excellent Iterum Versio stereo delay firmware by Alessandro Capano (check the links below). The delay is clocked from Pam’s, and also receives modulation from Random8. The delay output goes to Beads, where grains are seeded in response to triggers from Pam’s, and very slow modulation of the Dry/Wet control crossfades between the plucky and delay-drenched signal from Iterum Versio and longer re-triggered granular swells. Beads also adds reverb before the signal goes to Disting Mk4 for recording and 2hp Out for monitoring. If the video seems out of sync with the audio on this one, it’s because a MicroSD card during the on-site recording meant the audio had to be re-recorded at home. I’m afraid it just wasn’t t practical to hike up a mountain a second time. The original recording would have sounded very similar, though.
