In 1270 the harbor of Aden, set inside the rim of an extinct volcano, taxed the ships of the Indian Ocean for a sultan whose capitals lay inland. No diary of that year survives, and no one knows how many people lived there.
The film begins in a dry ravine where a staircase of stone rain tanks climbs the hillside, then follows the name (Eudaemon Arabia to the Greeks and Romans), the Geniza letters of about 1145, the Ayyubid conquest of 1173 and the Rasulid sultan Yusuf in 1270. It looks at what Marco Polo heard but probably never saw, the stitched ships and Arabian horses, and the goods that moved with the monsoon. It then follows Ibn Battuta (about 1330), the Ming envoys of the early 1420s, the Portuguese siege of 1513, the British landing of 1839, the coaling age after 1869, and the harbor of today.
