Why rebuild a bridge every year? At Q’eswachaka in Peru, renewing the grass ropes also renews the skills and community cooperation needed to make the crossing. Four Quechua communities gather to prepare local grass, twist cords into larger ropes and rebuild a suspension bridge across the Apurímac River gorge. This video explores the materials, shared work and relationship to the wider history of Inca roads and bridge building. UNESCO inscribed the knowledge, skills and rituals associated with the bridge’s annual renewal on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2013.
