Fall asleep to one winter night in January 1884, inside a white pine logging camp in the woods near Grayling, Michigan, where about 70 shanty boys share a 60 by 30 foot bunk camp warmed by one great stove. The men were out of their bunks by 4 a.m., earned something like $20 to $26 a month with bed and board, and ate their supper without a word. Out on the haul road, a sprinkler sled carrying about 100 barrels of water iced the track so that one team could draw a load of 15,000 feet of pine. So why was nobody allowed to talk at supper, and who turned the lamps down at nine?
