Sometimes trusting in ourselves doesn't look like pride.
It can look like needing to control everything. Refusing help. Allowing fear to control our decisions. Thinking we're not qualified enough to be used by God. Even religious activity can become self-reliance when we're depending on what we do instead of what Christ has done.
Continuing in Luke 18:9–14, Samuel and Karen look again at Jesus' parable of the Pharisee and the publican. One man appeared religious and righteous, yet Jesus said it was the other man—the one who cried out for mercy—who went home justified.
In this session, we explore some of the less obvious ways we may be trusting ourselves and ask an important question:
Who am I really trusting?
We also discuss:
Why going to church and doing religious things cannot save us
Why trying to control everything can reveal self-reliance
How refusing help can cause us to miss the help God sends
What fear and anxiety can reveal about where we're placing our confidence
Why we shouldn't let embarrassment or insecurity keep us from sharing the Gospel
How God can use us right where we are
Why our past can become part of our testimony instead of something that disqualifies us
Our confidence isn't in our ability to handle everything.
Our confidence is in the Lord—and He has never failed.
📖 Primary Scripture: Luke 18:9–14
Also discussed: Proverbs 3:5–6, Philippians 4:13
