What happens when something from your past quietly follows you into your relationship ... and into the bedroom?
Experiences from years or even decades ago can influence the way we experience touch, desire, vulnerability, pleasure and intimacy today.
Childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault, coercion and inappropriate touching can leave lasting effects, but so can shame, religious messages about sex, body image struggles and the beliefs we absorbed growing up.
And sometimes we don't recognize the connection.
A partner's touch may bring up discomfort. Initiating sex can feel complicated. We may shut down, pull away, struggle to receive pleasure or feel pressure where our partner never intended any.
That doesn't automatically mean your relationship is the problem.
Your spouse didn't necessarily create these wounds, but your relationship may be where those wounds finally become visible.
In this episode of From Roommates to Lovers, we're talking about how the past can show up in present-day intimacy, why understanding what's underneath our reactions matters, and how couples can move away from blame and toward curiosity, compassion and deeper understanding.
This isn't about diagnosing yourself or your partner, and it isn't about blaming the past for every intimacy struggle. It's about recognizing that sometimes what's happening between two people today has roots that began long before they ever met.
If you and your partner have drifted apart and you're trying to understand what happened .... and whether or how you want to find your way back ... this conversation may help you look at intimacy through a different lens.
