Wharf Street began as a fur-trading route for the Hudson's Bay Company in 1843. It became a bustling commercial hub during British Columbia’s Gold Rush. Today, some of the oldest masonry buildings in Western Canada are along Wharf Street.
As prospectors passed through on their way to mainland goldfields Wharf Street was their first impression of Victoria. Early wooden structures were soon replaced by brick and stone buildings, some with elaborate cast-iron detailing.
The street has transitioned from a shipping-based hub into a tourist district, with preserved heritage architecture, restaurants, and harbor views.
Wharf Street runs parallel to the waterfront.
Opened on January 20, 1908, the Fairmont Empress hotel is among Victoria’s most iconic landmarks. Designed by architect Francis Rattenbury, for the Canadian Pacific Railway to accommodate wealthy steamship and rail travelers arriving at the Inner Harbour.
Built between 1904 and 08, the hotel was meant to anchor Victoria as a prestigious provincial capital. Named to honor Queen Victoria, who was also the Empress of India.
British Columbia’s Parliament Buildings are often called "The Ledge" - a colloquial version for the home of “The Legislature" (or Legislative Assembly of British Columbia).
The former CPR Steamship Terminal was built in 1924 and stands as a monument to Victoria’s maritime history. Designed by Francis Rattenbury & Percy Leonard James, the neoclassical building was a vital passenger gateway. The Canadian Pacific Railway acquired the site in 1899.
