Human-in-the-loop is a familiar concept in AI Governance. But an equally important question is often overlooked: Who should that human be? Effective human oversight is not simply about keeping a person somewhere in the decision process. The person must have the right competence, system understanding, judgment, authority, and ability to intervene. In this episode, we explore five areas organizations should consider when selecting people for AI oversight: • Domain competence • AI and system literacy • Risk and control literacy • Independent judgment • Intervention capability We also examine how Agentic AI changes the oversight model. As AI systems become more autonomous, different intervention points may require different people, different expertise, and different levels of authority. The governance question therefore becomes more precise: Have we chosen the right human for each intervention point — and can we demonstrate why that person is fit for the role? This episode also considers the EU AI Act’s human oversight framework and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework as reference points for thinking about competence, authority, training, oversight roles, and organizational accountability.
