🎣 Imagine walking out your back door on a summer evening, casting a line into a pond you dug yourself, and pulling out a fresh fish for supper — while ducks leave you their eggs at the water's edge. No feed store, no fish counter, no bill. Build a pond once, and it can feed you for a decade, almost on its own. Here's how. 📍 *Choose the spot* — watch where rainwater naturally gathers on your land after a storm. That low hollow is where your pond wants to be. Work with the land, not against it, and keep it near the house where you'll tend it. ⛏️ *Dig it in levels* — a shallow shelf around the edge for plants and life, and a deep center (5+ feet) where fish shelter from summer heat and winter freeze. Then seal it with clay or a liner. 🦆 *Ducks are the engine* — not pets, workers. They stir and oxygenate the water, and their droppings fertilize it, feeding the whole food chain — plus they give you eggs every day. 🐟 *Fish are the harvest* — start with small fingerlings and be patient. By year two, many are ready for the table, largely fed by the pond itself. 🌿 *Plants keep it alive* — reeds to filter, oxygenators below, lilies on top. Skip them and it turns to green soup. Then it mostly runs itself — your job is to watch, not control. Once a year, the rich mud even feeds your vegetable garden. Would you build a food pond?
