The Stranger is a deceptively simple work. Written with blunt and almost unfeeling prose, it disguises Meursault's true feelings underneath short but effective descriptions of his life. As the translator Matthew Ward says in the preface, "What little Meursault says or feels or does resonates with all he does not say, all he does not feel, all he does not do".
