Later, the atmosphere shifts to a moonlit wilderness deep in the North Carolina hills, where towering trees, drifting fog, and the relentless howls of hunting hounds echo through the night as danger lurks behind every shadow. Our first story, THE PHANTOM VOICE, was first broadcast on February 6, 1938. When a respected United States senator is accused of accepting a $50,000 bribe, the prosecution presents an astonishing sound-motion picture that appears to capture the crime on film. Lamont Cranston quickly suspects the evidence has been cleverly manufactured. His investigation leads The Shadow into a web of murder, radio trickery, and political corruption involving a crooked attorney, a murdered voice actor, and an elaborate plot to destroy an innocent man’s reputation before justice can prevail. Our second story, HOUNDS IN THE HILLS, was first broadcast on February 20, 1938. Four young boys disappear into the remote mountains of North Carolina, where they are held captive inside a crumbling mansion hidden deep in the forest. The kidnappers—a deranged woman known as Old Sadie, her hunchbacked son Jake, and two ruthless criminals—believe their isolated hideout is beyond the reach of the law. As The Shadow closes in to rescue the children, he must outrun a savage pack of hunting hounds before confronting the gang in a desperate battle inside the haunted estate.
