Loud as a Morning in June is a bright, bouncy pop music anthem for anyone ready to repaint a life and let the sunshine in.
It starts on a Saturday morning at a hardware store. The narrator has spent four years in rooms the color of rain, a grey called Quiet Stone chosen by a former partner who said bright was too loud for a place like home. A man with a paint chip asks what the paint is for, and the narrator points straight at the one color that was never allowed. He shakes the can, and the sound of it is the moment everything starts to change.
Back home there is tape on the trim and a sheet on the floor, and with the first stroke the room stops belonging to anyone but the person holding the roller. A sister turns up with pizza and refuses to leave. She finds an old note in the kitchen drawer that says not to touch the hallway, and the two of them laugh until the roller drips on the floor, then paint the hallway twice. A neighbor leans in from the stairwell light and says somebody finally lives here. The narrator admits the truth: the grey was kept so a partner would feel at home, and the narrator stayed small so nobody would leave. They left anyway. So this time the narrator chooses the color, puts on two coats instead of one, and says it plainly: not covering anyone up, just letting in the sun.
"I'm not angry, I'm awake"
WHAT THIS SONG IS ABOUT
This is a song about taking up space again. Painting the walls becomes a way of reclaiming a home after a relationship that asked for quiet, small and neutral. There is no bitterness in it, only relief and a little mischief. The track turns heartbreak into a feel-good celebration of choosing your own color, laughing with the people who show up, and finally liking the room you live in.
WHO IT IS FOR
This one is for anyone who has just moved on and wants breakup empowerment songs instead of sad love songs. Play it while you clean the apartment after a breakup, while you paint a room, rearrange the furniture, or pack a box for a fresh start. It suits a weekend with friends, a sister on the couch with pizza, or a Saturday errand that feels like a new beginning. If you need feel good dance songs for getting ready, upbeat party music for a cleaning day, or a new start playlist with a sunny hook to sing along to, this is the one. It also fits anyone who has made themselves smaller to keep someone close and is ready to stop.
ABOUT THE ALBUM
This track is from Save Me with the Bassline, a set of confident, playful dance songs about nights out, missed trains, bright shoes, new keys and fresh starts. Across the album the narrators claim their own time, their own steps and their own rooms, and the mood stays upbeat even when the stories begin with a sting. If this one lifted your mood, there is plenty more to dance to.
