Timestamps: 0:00 Intro 0:40 1st half 5:53 2nd half 2017 - 2018 Season: Year 9 Overall: (22-1) Home: (9-0) Away: (11-0) Sun Belt: (9-0) Neutral (2-1) [Maui Invitational] We had a good but not great defensive performance against UMass prior to our game against Virginia, but my team responded to the challenge of playing a great defensive game against the Cavaliers as we held them to 36% shooting from the field. We were disruptive in the passing lanes, we were disciplined staying in front of our man which forced them to take long 2s and 3s, and we protected the rim extremely well in that game. Our excellent team defense allowed our offense to get in transition and not allow Virginia to set up their zone defense, and when we did have to play in the half court we were patient and took a lot of good shots. We were able to get dribble penetration against their zone easily, but there were times where Virginia's defense did play well which is why we took so many 3s. Even though we took more 3s than normal, it didn't matter that much because my teams are usually good at grabbing offensive rebounds and we did convert some of those for 2nd chance points off those rebounds. After finishing our non conference slate of games on the schedule, we went on to rack up 9 straight win in Sun Belt conference play without much resistance. During those first 9 conference games, the only team that gives us a challenge is Louisiana-Monroe. UL Monroe is the second best team in the conference mainly because the last 3 seasons they keep getting one of my players to transfer there. Levar Porter (Sophomore) is the most recent player to transfer to UL Monroe and he is now the starting PG, Ray Chapman (Junior) is their starting SF that transferred out 2 seasons ago, and Brady Robison (Senior, SG) is their star player that played for us at Troy 3 seasons ago. They gave us a bit of a scare when we played them on the road before we eventually pulled away down the stretch, where we won (72-58). Our poor free throw shooting and at times our inability to contain Robison and Porter was what kept the game close in our last matchup. So at the halfway point in conference play, we get our rematch with the Warhawks at home and this time we know what to do. Our game plan is to make their back court duo ineffective by trying to make them pass the ball to their other 3 players and make them beat us. Robison is a 2 way player that can score at all 3 levels at a very high level, and Porter is their playmaker that can find open guys while being able to score at the same time. Robison lit us up scoring the ball last time so we have to play tight defense on him all game. For Porter we're trying to keep him as far away from the basket as possible by making him shoot 3s or passing it out to someone else, and whenever he gets a ball screen we're changing our ball screen coverage to what ever allows us to push him out to the 3 point line so he can't be effective in the pick and roll. Other than those 2 guys, we're not worried about the others.
