One day the god Freyr climbed into Hlidskjalf, the high seat of Odin from which the whole world can be seen, and looked north into the land of the giants. There he saw Gerd, daughter of the giant Gymir, walking from her father's hall, and when she raised her arms the sky and the sea shone with her light. Freyr came home sick with longing and would not eat, sleep or speak, so his father Njord sent Freyr's servant Skirnir to find out what was wrong. Skirnir agreed to ride to Jotunheim and ask for Gerd's hand, but only if Freyr gave him his horse that could cross flickering fire and his sword that fought by itself. Skirnir rode through the dark and the ring of flame around Gymir's hall, past the fierce hounds at the gate. Gerd refused eleven golden apples and a ring of gold, and gave way only when Skirnir threatened her with a cold and lonely life. She promised to meet Freyr after nine nights in the grove of Barri, and Freyr sighed that one night was long, two were longer, and three would be too long to bear. But the sword never came back: at Ragnarok Freyr will face the fire giant Surt with only a stag's antler in his hand. A tender folk ballad about a god who traded his sword for love.

LYRICS
(Freyr)
Freyr climbed up to Odin's high seat
Where the whole wide world lies in view
He looked to the north, to the giants' land
And a light came shining through
Gerd walked out from her father's hall
Gymir's daughter, fair and tall
When she raised her arms, the sea grew bright
And the sky was filled with light
Freyr, Freyr, what will you give
For the giant's daughter in the snow?
He gave a sword for a bride
And he let the bright blade go
(Freyr)
He came home silent, he would not eat
He would not sleep, he would not speak
Old Njord called for Skirnir then
"Go find what my son must seek"
"Give me your horse that runs through flame
Give me the sword that fights alone"
Freyr laid the sword in Skirnir's hand
And Skirnir rode out on his own
Through the dark and the wall of fire
Past the hounds at Gymir's gate
Gerd stood cold at the door of the hall
"Who rides to me so late?"
He offered eleven apples of gold
She turned her face away
He offered a ring of the purest gold
She would not hear him say
Then he spoke of a cold and lonely life
And at last she answered yes
Freyr, Freyr, nine nights to wait
In the grove of Barri she will be
One night is long, and two are longer
How will I live through three?
(Freyr)
They met in Barri when the nights had passed
Under birch leaves soft and green
And the barley fields grew gold that year
The richest the world had seen
But the bright sword is gone from Freyr
When the fire giant walks the land
At the end of days he will meet the flame
With an antler in his hand
Freyr, Freyr, what did you give
For the giant's daughter in the snow?
You gave a sword for a bride
And you let the bright blade go
Freyr
(Freyr)
