But this Kenya safari surprised me in ways I never expected. The moment we entered through the Kimana Gate, we were welcomed by a magnificent tower of Masai giraffes. As our game drive continued, we spotted impalas, vervet monkeys, baboons, African bush elephants and an incredible variety of birdlife. Honestly, I have never seen so many birds on a safari before! From Helmeted Guineafowl, Grey Crowned Cranes, Black-headed Herons and White-bellied Bustards to Common Ostriches, Egyptian Geese, and Blacksmith Lapwings, every corner of Amboseli seemed full of life. The biggest surprise came at one of Amboseli's famous swamps, where hundreds of Greater Flamingos were feeding in the shallow waters. Meanwhile, Mount Kilimanjaro remained hidden behind thick clouds throughout the day. After hours of searching and talking to other safari guides, we finally found what we had come for — a massive herd of more than 30 African elephants, including huge tuskers, females and playful calves crossing right in front of us. It was the perfect grand finale to an unforgettable Amboseli game drive. We returned to Sentrim Amboseli Lodge with our hearts full and hoped for a sunrise view of Mount Kilimanjaro the next morning.
