What happens when two dead stars collide? White dwarfs are the dense remnants of stars like our sun, Earth-sized objects carrying the mass of an entire star, held up by the quantum mechanical stubbornness of electrons. When two of them spiral together, driven by gravitational waves over billions of years, the result is one of the most violent and unpredictable events in the universe. Depending on their masses, compositions, and how they merge, the outcome can be radically different. Some collisions ignite a thermonuclear explosion so powerful it briefly outshines an entire galaxy, a Type Ia supernova. Others produce a bizarre surviving remnant that shouldn't exist. And in the most extreme cases, the merged object collapses into a neutron star through a pathway that bypasses the normal route entirely. These explosions forged the iron in your blood and the calcium in your bones. They revealed dark energy and the accelerating expansion of the universe, earning a Nobel Prize. And soon, space-based gravitational wave detectors like LISA will let us watch these systems spiral together in real time. In this video, we explore electron degeneracy pressure, the Chandrasekhar limit, unstable mass transfer, thermonuclear detonation in degenerate matter, accretion-induced collapse, and why the same type of event can produce wildly different outcomes. This is the full story of what happens when two white dwarfs merge.
