Rules while plague hearts existed:
*Solo survivor
*No base (until all plague hearts are destroyed)
*No driving (until all plague hearts are destroyed)
*Only take and use items from plague hearts (until moving into base)
*No minimap
Exceptions:
*The other two NPCs that I started with tagged along with me, helping at the start, though once they died I was completely on my own (they lasted for a handful of hearts).
*Outposts, these can be set up, items can be stored in them and removed
*Partway through the plague hearts I chose to become a leader
*Once all plague hearts are destroyed only then can I move into the base as well as drive
First bit of this video I am just wasting time waiting for the leader quests to kick in. I agreed to help someone with an issue involving some hostiles, though per usual I don't do that right away, will be good to have some backup for a bit, though sometimes that can backfire, NPCs still have their uses. Okay, quest started, I met with the neighbors, The LKQ at the clinic, they had plenty of tobacco, but lacked any hygiene stuff, so gave me tobacco to trade for that with another group.
I refueled my truck, and even though my survivor said there was a bloater, I didn't think about where it was at (didn't even see it until I played the video back slowly), and it burst as soon as I finished fueling but just missed me. Glad I got cured of all that infection already. Also, good thing I'm driving now, feral pack was waiting right at the crossroad and gave chase. I did stop and back into them, but ferals are so hard to hit, always ducking down and going under the vehicles, I zoomed forward again, got one but no point in wrecking my truck, I don't see me coming back to base again anyway.
I drove to Vista View to meet with The Newcomers, they had plenty of entertainment stuff, dvds, video games, adult magazines... I actually just making that stuff up, but they had stuff to trade but wanted tobacco. Odd how these enclaves are supposedly trading for these things but never actually take them from me. Next and final stop, The Happy Campers who had plenty of hygienics but were bored like dead rats, as such needed some entertainment. Glad I talked to the leader quick enough since a screamer showed up blasting its alarm, but with mission accomplished I was outa there, what shows up afterwards is their problem.
The bad guys were at the Fuel Depot at the crossroad north of Sawyer's Crossing. I parked my truck to the side of the fuel tank, giving me sort of a safe nook to hide in, short of a bloater or big guy coming. But the NPC with me was stuck fighting the zombies, his choice as that is what NPCs do, always the aggression, fighting everything they see, so I let him at it. I really didn't care if this mission ended up failure, it was just to give me something to do other than looting while waiting for the next leader quest. I ended up going inside of the shed once the bad guys were outside, hid behind the door, nobody came in, friendly NPC dead, hostiles dead, but I'm alive, works for me.
I got back to my truck and drove away. Was going to start looting some of the hearts in Sawyer's Crossing but the next leader quest, Greed started. Okay, let's get it done! And so I start driving back to The Happy Campers.
