The Post Flood Mitigation Task Force has begun demolishing illegal structures built on silted and reclaimed land along the Kpeshie Lagoon at Laboma as part of government’s efforts to prevent flooding in the Greater Accra Region.
The exercise followed a directive from the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) on August 6, after an inspection of the Laboma Beach enclave. Occupants within what was previously a protected lagoon buffer zone were given 21 days to vacate.
Led by the 48 Engineer Regiment, the Task Force pulled down structures built on land that once served as a water retention basin with lush vegetation. The team clarified that the exercise is targeting identified illegal structures and does not affect the entire Laboma area.
A fresh wall along the Labadi-Teshie road was also demolished after authorities identified ongoing destruction of vegetation and filling of the area with solid materials.
Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ohenewaa Akweley Ocloo said the operation formed part of a broader strategy to restore waterways and reduce flood risks. She also revealed that heavy boulders had been used as foundation material to reclaim portions of the Kpeshie Lagoon before they were covered with sand and other fill materials for development.
