There is a door at 131 Beacon Street in Boston that Joseph Patrick Kennedy was never allowed to enter. Not literally. He could have walked through it anytime. The building belonged to the Somerset Club, the oldest and most exclusive private club in New England, and in the early twentieth century its membership was Protestant, Anglo-Saxon, and old-money in a way that made the distinction feel geological — not a preference, but a fact of nature. Kennedy was Irish. Kennedy was Catholic. Kennedy had money, more of it every year, but the Somerset Club did not open its door for money. It opened for lineage. Lineage was the one thing Joseph P. Kennedy could not buy, manufacture, or take by force. So he stood, metaphorically, on the other side of that door for most of his early life. He noted the shape of it. He memorized the lock. And then he spent the next forty years building a dynasty specifically designed to make the door irrelevant — not by accepting the terms of the people who built it, but by acquiring something they could never take back: a son in the White House.
