It is situated at the entrance of the Bay of All Saints (Baía de Todos os Santos) and is notable for being one of the few west-facing beaches in Brazil, making it a prime spot for watching spectacular sunsets. The beach features calm, shallow waters that are popular for swimming and family outings. Its 300-meter stretch of sand is framed by historic colonial-era fortifications and was the site of Bahia's first European settlement, Vila Velha. The beach was also recognized by CNN as one of the top 50 beaches in the world in 2014. Farol da Barra (Barra Lighthouse), also known as Santo Antônio Lighthouse, is a historic lighthouse located at the tip of the Padrão point on the grounds of the Santo Antônio da Barra Fort. It is widely recognized as the oldest lighthouse in the Americas, with its first structure established in 1698 and the current tower built in 1839. The 22-meter (72-foot) tower is painted with distinctive black and white bands and is an active aid to navigation, with a range of 16 nautical miles. The fort and lighthouse are protected as historic structures by Brazil's National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute, and the site also houses the Bahia Nautical Museum.
