This presentation was delivered at the 2026 Joint Conference of the History of Economic Thought Society of Australia (HETSA) and the Japanese Society for the History of Economic Thought (JSHET) held at Doshisha University in Kyoto. The presentation is based on Chapter 4 of my book, America's Neglected Protectionist Tradition. The chapter argues that the system of the American protectionists rests on distinct foundations from that found in the British Classical School associated with Adam Smith and David Ricardo. The American School included thinkers such as Alexander Hamilton, Friedrich List, Henry Clay, and Henry Charles Carey. The School is often associated with the American System of capitalism. The book will appeal to readers of Ha-Joon Chang's Kicking Away the Ladder and Erik S. Reinert's How Rich Countries Got Rich and Why Poor Countries Stay Poor.
