A fjord is, literally, the place you can cross from. People who lived here did not see a deep inlet as a break in the road. They saw it as where the road continued, because for them the water was the road. The instrument is old too: the nyckelharpa appears in carvings from the 1300s, and instead of pressing the strings with your fingers, you press wooden keys along the neck and small tangents stop the strings for you. It very nearly died out, and was brought back in the last century by a handful of makers and players.
