Webb Found Objects Barely Twice Jupiter’s Mass — And They Shouldn’t Be This Small

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has pushed star formation into a completely new mass range.
While observing the nearby star-forming region IC 348, astronomers discovered extremely small brown dwarfs weighing only about twice the mass of Jupiter. These are the least-massive brown dwarfs identified so far, challenging models of how small an object can be and still form through the same gravitational-collapse process that produces stars.
IC 348 lies roughly 1,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Perseus. Webb used its highly sensitive NIRCam instrument to search through the region’s young stars, gas, and dust for objects too faint for previous observatories to study in detail.
Brown dwarfs occupy the strange territory between stars and planets. They form more like stars, from collapsing clouds of gas, but they never become massive enough to sustain normal hydrogen fusion in their cores.
That makes these newly discovered objects especially important.
At only around two Jupiter masses, they are approaching the mass scale normally associated with giant planets. Their existence raises a fundamental question: how small can the star-formation process actually go?
Webb’s observations also revealed young protostars firing powerful jets into surrounding material, creating glowing Herbig-Haro objects throughout IC 348.
