Tranquil Japanese Garden at Komyo-in Temple, Kyoto | Zen Atmosphere & Nature Sounds Experience the tranquil beauty and spiritual depth of Komyo-in (光明院), a serene sub-temple of Tofuku-ji in Kyoto. Gokuraku Jodo (the Pure Land of Amida), Joruri Jodo (the Pure Land of Yakushi), and Shaba Sekai (our mundane world)—these three realms of Buddhism are simultaneously expressed in this serene garden. Looking toward the back and the left and right edges, you’ll notice prominent standing stones, each flanked by subtle yet striking companion stones. These are said to represent the Buddhas of each realm (Amida, Yakushi, and Shaka) accompanied by their divine attendants. Scattering from the center toward the outer edges are countless standing stones of various sizes. To me, they felt like people listening to the teachings of the Buddha.
