Three days ago you quit your job to take a year off. You're thirty-two, and the spreadsheet on your phone says exactly what that year will have cost you by sixty-five, to the dollar.
Everybody has a theory. Your manager thinks you'll be back by summer. Your cousin has told half the family you got fired. Your dad thinks you're sick and won't ask. None of them know you planned it for three years: a thousand dollars into one savings account on the first of every month, the same morning as the rent.
You'll go back to the parking garage where it started, and the folded doctor's note you never handed in. You'll watch the market drop while your money sits still, drive your dad thirteen hundred miles to a trip he's been saving for since 1998, and get one offer that would make the whole year cheaper. Then, at the end, you'll do the math out loud.
Nobody in this story is wrong. Troy's camper and his banked vacation hours are a choice too. This is what a year off really costs, and what it buys.
Every figure in this video comes from one ledger model, checked before it was recorded, so the numbers add up from the first transfer to the last scene.
