TRUE (You Don't Love Me) - James Booker - Montreux 1978

“True (You Don’t Love Me)” – James Booker (Montreux 1978) Originally written and recorded by New Orleans bandleader Paul Gayten in 1947, just after World War II, True echoes the emotional restraint and longing of wartime ballads. Gayten discovered Clarence “Frogman” Henry and produced his 1956 hit “Ain’t Got No Home,” but True remained a forgotten gem — until James Booker revived it with this haunting, gospel-tinged performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Booker transforms quiet sorrow into raw confession. One take. One performance. And suddenly, the song belonged to him.
