On 19 August 2026, Moderna and Merck said their personalised mRNA cancer vaccine had passed a phase 3 trial in 1,137 people with melanoma, a first for mRNA. But how much it helped still hasn't been published: the numbers are due in Madrid on 24 October. How each dose is built from a patient's own tumour, who it is really for, and what the famous 49% means. Plus Britain: nine NHS hospitals, a 10,000-patient promise that was never about this vaccine, and the road through MHRA and NICE. About the numbers (checked 28 Sep 2026): the 49% comes from the earlier phase 2b trial (157 patients), not from phase 3, whose results are not public yet. No application for approval and no price have been announced. Keytruda costs £2,630 a vial at NICE list price; almost £95,000 a year at the trial dose is our own sum, and the NHS pays a confidential, lower price. Not medical advice. This is not a cure or a preventive vaccine: it was tested to lower the risk of melanoma coming back after surgery. If you or someone you love has melanoma, talk to your oncologist. I'm Arthur Vale.
