By the next morning, it had crossed half of America and torn New York in two. The rift opens in Dickson County and runs east. It splits a street in Nashville, brings a mountainside down in the Appalachians, and swallows a stretch of Interstate 81 in Virginia. In Washington, D.C., it tears across the lawn in front of the Capitol. In Philadelphia, rows of brick houses slide into the ground while police and paramedics push the crowds clear. Then it reaches New York. A street in Queens splits toward the camera. People pour up out of the subway. A Manhattan avenue fills with people running from a wall of dust. The Brooklyn Bridge comes down, and a tower drops into the earth. From the air, the gap runs the whole length of Manhattan, and the island begins to come apart. The next morning, the survivors stand on the far bank and look at what is left of the skyline. No narrator. No explanation.
