Written much later in his career, in 1948, this work (subtitled Offertoire) shows a completely different, much more intimate and pastoral side of Dupré’s genius. Left as a manuscript without an official opus number, it captures the essence of a captured liturgical improvisation.
• The Theme: It is based on the cheerful, innocent, and inherently joyful 19th-century French carol, "Il est né, le divin enfant".
• Structure & Style: Unlike the strict, segmented variations of Op. 20, this piece flows as a continuous, fluidly woven musical tapestry lasting only about 4–5 minutes.
• Character: It is a liturgical piece meant to be played during the Offertory of the Christmas Midnight Mass. Instead of overwhelming the listener with dramatic virtuosity, it focuses on charm, elegant modulations, and delicate registrations (often using flutes and soft reeds) to evoke a peaceful, cradle-side atmosphere.
